Using Image Optimization to Improve Website Load Time
Wednesday, June 30th, 2010While there are more and more users who have broadband internet service, there is still a great portion that does not. Toronto web design companies are wise to advise clients to keep the dial-up community in mind when creating their website design so as not to exclude this still major portion of internet users. For dial-up users, loading time can be greatly extended and should be a consideration for the website.
Text is not usually a problem and is normally the first to show up when a website is loaded – even with dial-up. But when it comes to loading problems, it is usually the images that cause the major problems. For this reason, any Toronto website design company knows that it is important to strike a balance between the two. While no one would find a website with nothing but text to be super appealing, too many images can cause more problems than it’s worth.
If there are images that need to be loaded, every effort should be made to minimize the impact that will be made on loading times. Thankfully, there is software available these days which will allow you to edit these images down to a more feasible file size. The goal is to get the appearance you want without the long load times.
Photoshop is often used to modify the quality of a JPEG file when coming up with web design. The normal setting that would work to maintain the image while limiting file size is between 8 and 10. If you don’t have access to Photoshop, you will want to look online for one of the many free image compressors that are available and can be downloaded which will be able to do the same job.
One other option to be pointed out is that images can be saved in PNG format as opposed to JPEG. GIF is another option for a file saving format that will get a high quality image that is small in size; GIF has the unique feature of eliminating any color information not needed for your particular image, giving it a smaller file size. However, GIF also has the possibility to change the image’s appearance, so beware when choosing this option!
