Social Media Marketing

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

Social media is the interpersonal interaction of individuals through a global digital platform.  Content is shared via online discussions, evaluations, collaboration, commentary and feedback.   Unlike industrialized media, social media tools are open to everyone and typically has little or no cost.  Additionally, social media can be instantaneous, has no constraints on length or time and is fueled by human interaction via technology.

Social media can be a variety of forums including:

Blogs:  WordPress, Vox
Microblogs: Twitter, Jaiku
Social networking: Myspace, Facebook, Linkedin, Bebo
Video Sharing: Avatars United
Virtual Reality: Second Life
Reference: Wikipedia, Google Groups
Social Network Aggregation: Plaxo
Photo Sharing: Flickr

Social Media Marketing exposes your site to large audiences spontaneously and can increase traffic without interfering with any of your standard advertising.    The exposure and gaining popularity on social news sites like Reddit or Digg will get you links and exposure worth thousands of dollars if you were to buy them.  In turn the popularity can increase your site’s income potential as it gains better search rankings and links.  Obtaining popularity on specific social media sites like StumbleUpon or del.icio.us will drive both primary and secondary traffic to your site.   (Primary traffic is the number of visitors you attract from social media sites.  Secondary or referral traffic is from sites that linked to you and then in turn send you visitors.)

A social media marketer is someone who understand the tools they are using and the community they’re involved in.  Good social media marketing requires an emotional involvement.  Social media marketing doesn’t require a degree or special training; it can be done yourself or with a freelance programmer/designer.  Remember as in any human relationship there is a level of trust – successful social media marketing demands that you contribute meaningfully to the community and gain that level of trust.  This is people to people interaction, it is not traditional marketing and many communities will ignore you if you present yourself as a “Marketing Agent”.

The more supporters your site has, the quicker word spreads about your site.  Social media marketing is an low-cost way to entice people to your site and grow your visitors.

Introduction to Pay-Per-Click Advertising – Part 2

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

In the first part of this aritcle, you learned how PPC advertising works. You learned about the more popular PPC networks as well as two PPC options available to you: PPC advertising on search engine results pages and PPC advertising on other sites. In this article, you’ll learn a few tips on how you can create effective PPC campaigns.

There have been books devoted to Google AdWords and other PPC networks. It’s a good idea if you can get a hold of these books to educate yourself about PPC advertising, but there are a number of basic things we’ll discuss in this article that you can immediately use to improve your profitability.

1. Choose the Right Keywords

If you want to succeed in PPC advertising, you must be able to choose the right or profitable keywords to use. There are two key factors you need to consider and strike a balance on: the popularity of the keyword you want to use and the cost of the keyword.

The keyword or keyword phrase you use for your PPC campaign must b one that people are actually searching for. Wordtracker and Keyword Elite are two programs you can use to determine how many searches your keyword or keyword phrase gets every month.

You also need to consider how much it will cost you to use a keyword or keyword phrase in your PPC campaign. It’s not cost-effective at all for you to pay $1.25 per click if every visitor who clicks your ad and goes to your site only nets you $0.50.

You will need to identify the keyword or keyword phrase that receives a good number of monthly searches and doesn’t cost you a high cost per click (CPC) so that you can actually turn a profit from your PPC campaign.

2. Use Prequalifiers

Since you are paying per click, you want to only generate people who are likely to buy from you. A visitor may click on your ad but he may not buy anything from you. That means you spent money to get that visitor to your site even if he did not purchase anything from your site.

You need to discourage information-seekers from clicking on your link by mentioning price in your PPC ad. While this isn’t entirely foolproof, this will at least discourage people who are simply looking for information. If they see your ad with a price in it, they are less likely to click on it and cost you money. They can go somewhere else to ind the information they need.

3. Write Effective Ad Copy

You want to compel people to click on your link so you need to learn how to write ad copy that accomplishes this. There are tons of articles online you can read that will help you learn how to create persuasive copy and come up with powerful headlines.

4. Test Your PPC Ads on a Regular Basis

If you want to be successful in PPC advertising, you need to constantly test your ads. Testing will help you control your advertising budget because you’ll see which PPC ads are not working and which ones are working. Constantly test your ad’s headlines and copy. Ditch the ones that don’t work and increase the budget on those ads that are performing well.

5. Continue Learning

Engage in continuous learning. Look at your competitors’ ads. If you keep seeing the same ad again and again, you can safely assume that it is converting well for the person using that ad. Analyze what makes their ad works and try to apply what you learn on your own ads.

Ways To Customize Your Website

Monday, October 4th, 2010

In a world filled with trends, it is no wonder that people want to make their websites as presentable and appealing to the eye as possible.  In the same way that people want to wear the latest fashions, website owners want their website design to reflect what is current and fashionable in the online environment.  No wonder so many Toronto web design companies are spending time working with their clients on designing websites that are customized in such a way that sets them apart.

When you have a company that has an online presence it makes sense to want to present that company in the best light possible.  This starts with having a website that is both professional and polished in its appearance.   Take a look at a few things to consider when it comes to making sure you have a top-notch webpage.

Color Schemes

This may seem obvious, but make sure to select a color scheme that works well together.  Background colors and accent colors should always complement each other (and vice versa).   Also, think about what works well based on the type of website you are building.  If you need a more professional website design, using colors like purple and yellow might not be the best idea.  In this case it would depend on what your goals are for the website.

Themes

The theme is equally important.  You wouldn’t want to develop a website for your catering company and have graphics of wildlife throughout.  Make sure you choose a theme that suits the image of your company.

Fonts

Be sure to choose the proper font for your website design as well.  A professional Toronto web design company would advise against using fonts that are too artsy for a website that is for designed for selling office supplies for example – it just wouldn’t look right.  In addition, make sure that the font size is appropriate as well.  Fonts that are too big or too small can have a negative impact on your website.

In conclusion, the important thing is to put yourself in the mindset of your potential visitor as best you can.  This will help you in customizing your website to the specifications that make the most sense based on the goals you would like to accomplish through the use of your website.
